Polaris 700 twin modifications
#1
I just recently bought a new 06 Sportsman 700 twin. Naturally I got a great deal, considering the bike was 2 years old, but never sold.
So far I love the bike, but I normally ride an LT500r Suzuki Quadzilla, so I'm already getting bored with the amount of power the Sportsman has on tap.
I'd like to do a few simple performance mods to the bike, but I'm not sure where to start. Looking to do the best bolt on gains first, but since every bike is a little different, I thought I'd see if there were any Sportsman 700 owners out there that had any advise. What bolt on gains the most? Clutching? Pipe? Carb? Other?
I'm not really interested in tearing into the engine at this point. Just looking for a quick gain that won't compromise the ridability or reliability of the bike.
Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions.

Leave it alone man, if that bike bores you, you should stay with your LTZ 500. I too have the same bike and came from riding Honda trx 250 r's and hear what your saying. But the more you ride a utility and the less you ride your screamer, the more you will appreciate the power of your utility. As far as upgrades what type of power are you looking for? Low end, mid, top end?

Mainly mid to top end power. From 0-20 it performs very well really. I ride with a fairly large variety of different quads on a regular basis. Most of them sport quads from 700efi raptors, shee's, 450r's, z400's, etc. My brother has a 750 Brute Force, which is really the only other Utility I ride with (other than my dad's old honda foreman). I have yet to line it up against a bike that will hole shot it in a dirt drag race. But once that 700 twin hits 35 it's pretty weak.
I'm really not concerned with trying to outrun everyone with my 700 twin. If I want to do that, I can just ride the Zilla instead of the 700 twin. The old zilla has no problem making quick work of every quad I ride with on a regular basis. I'd just like to take a little lead out of the sled.
I almost think the clutching is the problem from riding the 700 twin. If I turn the tach on, and watch the speedo and nail it, the bike hits 6100 rpm at somewhere between 30-35 mph. The tach pretty much stays at 6100 as the speed increases, which pretty much indicates that I'm just waiting on the PVT to shift, and the bike feels very weak at this point.
My brothers 750 Brute Force will absolutely own the 700 twin at anything over 30-35 mph. Although it doesn't have a built in tach like the polaris, I can tell from listening to it and riding it that it has a much more aggresive upshift to it's belt tranny. The engine on the Brute Force noticably increases in RPM till it's up to the 60-65 MPH range.
So I'm thinking that if the engine on the Polaris wasn't practically setting against the rev limiter it would accelerate much harder in the 35 mph + range. My gut instinct tells me to put a clutch kit in it, and set it with a more aggresive upshift to the transmission. But I could be way off. It may just need more power to pull harder on top. I'm hoping someone has worked through this and knows what I'm talking about, and how to fix it.

I agree!! Put HeelClicker on my sons 2004.5 PoPo 700 and woke it up. Had one on my 07 PoPo 800 and woke it up. Finally got the new weights for the 2008 PoPo 800 and woke it up! (2008 Polaris changed the primary and heavier weights 74grams! HeelClicker is the way to go!!!!!

Thanks for the response guys. Who makes the heelclicker kit?
The only poly clutch kit I've messed with was an HPD kit on my brothers old 400 scrambler. I wasn't real impressed with it.

I put an 800 intake on the polaris. I can tell that it seems to rev slightly faster with that. I also put a EPI Clutch Kit on mine. You'll notice a difference but it's not going to hang with a 750 with any simple mods like that. Polaris just weighs a lot and the weight kicks in above 35ish.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the heelclicker kit. The price was reasonable, and I asked the guy what I could expect from the kit before telling him my expectations. He pretty much described a cure for the exact problem I think I have. Hopefully it works as well as he described. It seems that most people are happy with them from the research I have done.
I guess the next step after this is probably going to be a pipe. Does anyone have a recommendation for a pipe that they felt added a fair amount of power? I was considering the Hot Seat True Dual setup, but the price seems a little high. I've got less money in my ceramic coated header, dual piped, flowmaster mufflered setup on my truck, than what they want for their ceramic coated true dual kit. That just doesn't seem right to me. LOL

We used to joke that putting the 800 header pipe on a 700, along with the 800 air box snorkel, better air filter and White Bros pipe (private labeled by Pure-Polaris) would turn the 700 into a 700 HO. Actually it's no joke. These mods along with a Heel Clicker will improve your performance noticeably.
