'96 sport 400 questions
#1
hey guys. haven't been here in a while. I recntly sold my sp 700 and I'm looking to get into something sportier. I found a '96 or '97 polaris sport with the 400 two stroke motor. its ay my local dealership and the owner has a mechanics lien on it right now. I can get it for a song. it has a brand new trans in it along with new nelts and tune up. can anyone tell me more about them? any problems with them? I haven't rode it yet. its a little rough from sitting out in the sun for a while so its all faded out. its sounds good and fired on the fire try. the guy says its pretty fast and is an excellant trail rider. let me know of any experiences with them, the good and bad. I need an opinion on whether to get it, a '00 xplorer 400 or a '00 yamaha warrior. let me know which one. thanks

The 400 Sport can be made into a rocket with a few $100s.Find out if the engine has had a topend done and the stock piston replaced with a good forged piston and check the counter balance for oil.(same thing on the 400 Explorer)
These darn 400s are addictive. The 400 EXplorer can be made to smoke a 700 on power and mudding.

will do. its at my local dealer and i have a pretty good relationship with the owner and i honestly don't think he would steer me wrong about it. what mods can be doneto it? iv'e done some searching and can't find anything for them. that's why i am leaning towards the warrior as parts are avaiable everywhere. lol, my buddy's xplorer would need quite a bit in order to 'smoke' the 700 i just got rid of. it is a pretty quick ride though

these are great atvs i have the 400 sport 1998 and like it more than my 500 scrambler 2001. it starts easier. first pull or the tap of the switch it cold hot or whatever. never had an over heating prob. good in mud for a 2/4 its great. the only things I have replaced was starter, swingarm, starter benex, and fixed side cover of trans with jb weld because i snapped the chain going over a jump with a loose chain i am now going to get a chain tentioner sugest you do 2. Also has tomes of power and torqe stock. pull weelies burnouts everything

thanks for the replies guys. I ended up getting the yamaha warrior. its a pretty nice ride and has tons of power. the sport just needed to much to make it really trail worthy and I got the warrior for the same price. thanks again guys

I'm kinda jonesing for a 400L myself. I looked at one a few weeks ago but it was a real turd. The owner had resprayed the frame with all the plastic in place over dirt, chips in paint.......over the top of the rear brake caliper.......... The coolent was non-existent......leaking trans seal missing screws everywhere...... it was enough abuse to make a grown man cry..........needless to say, I ran away screaming. Not many around my area for sale. more 2 stroke scramblers than 400l's.
