Figures the one I bought would be the year with issues!
One question
If this is such a common issue why didn't Yamaha recall it and fix the issue? Its not only a manufacturer defect but a serious safety hazard as well.

CPSC investigated a bit and determined there was no Safety hazard. Yamaha never admitted the design was defective. But they did beef it up in 2002. I guess they consider the 2001 part weak, but acceptible.
BTW, My 2001 tranny lasted for almost 7 years before I lost a tog on the 2nd gear.
