Hello there i have a 2001 Rancher 350. A month ago it started somking a little (not really much at all) at high RPM. Then a little over a week ago i heard what sounds like a tapping noise in the engine(sounds like vales tapping in a car). THEN i went riding a few days ago and it started somking really bad and the tapping is getting worse. The higher RPM the louder the tapping is. I also put my hand close to the exhust and gave it some gas and i had little spots of oil on my hand so i know that is not good lol. I want to see if anyone knows what this is becaues i really dont want to spend all that money to have it fixed if it is something I can do(if you know what i mean). So if anyone has any ideas PLEASE let me know. Thanks everone..

 

youshould be able to adjust the valves, get the service manual for your quad it'll set ya bck couple $ but its well worth it...ya better not ride it till ya do tho

 

yep i did some more research for ya and every 10-20 hours it looks like people are doin your valves it is usually pretty easy, on my wifes honda its an adjustment on my kaw kfx400 its shims...get a feeler gauge when you get your book get one with about 28 gauges from advanced auto (about 7 dollars) just go to the manufacturer web site for the book altho you may get it cheaper ebayin or sumptin.

Thanks man i will be doing that right now lol. What about the smoke and the oil coming from the tail pipe will adjusting the valves fix that or is it something else???

 

You probably need new piston rings. And ajust the valves.

 

Good lesson here folks....when your engine starts tapping...it's time to tear it down and see what's going on....and not go out and ride it until it gets even worse and does even more damage!!!

 

Ok thats not good but that is what i was thinking with both of them. So is the rings hard to change or is it something you have to take it somewhere. I have done a lot of work like that with cars and a lot with 4 wheelers but not down to the piston lol. So what do yall think. Thanks

 

If you haven't torn a motor down before, I'd suggest taking it to someone, or getting someone who is experienced to help...

The way you describe it tapping and smoking badly, I'd say there's a good possibility. You won't really know until it's torn down, so it can be measured and inspected.
