Well these are totally different machines for very different styles of riding. Neither are doing to be worth a large amount in trade or sale. You need to figure which is more important to you. Speed or mud. Personally I would go for the utility machine just because that would be more important to me.

What shape is it in? Some people have 98s with less miles than a person with a 06. When I bought a second hand sportsman the 2001 I bought was in better shape than the 04 and 05 I was looking at.
I sold a mint condition 2000 Honda 450 Foreman for a 2001 Polaris. Maybe down the road that Honda will sell for abit more but it sure was not as enjoyable to to ride which is really all that matters.
If you what a investment then invest in gold and oil stocks instead.

Something that old you are taking a chance. Your best bet is to decide which you want to do more. I had a 97 explorer that ran great for 5 years when I traded it for an 02 SP500.

You have to consider where you will be riding, what type of riding, who else will be riding it etc. These are totally different bikes I would think if they are in good shape either one would be worth getting. The 400ex is a dime a dozen around here I usually see the 4x4 going for more money but again its all in how good a shape they're in.

Are you sure its a Sportsman 400(425) and not the 2 stroke Xplorer 400 (378)? I thought the 4 stroke Sportsman 400 did not come out until 2001? Here is a pic of both side by side. Xplorer 400 sports400
The SP 400 has independent rear suspension and the Xlporer has a straight axle.
No matter they are both good ATVs but the 2 stroke Xplorer has more get up and go than a Sportsman 400.
