Hello all, I am new to this forum and new to atv's. Bought a couple of used atv's to start 1998 Polaris Trailboss 250 and 2004 Honda Recon 250 mainly to get acquainted with how things work before going on to bigger and better things. The problem I'm having is with the Polaris, idles rough until you rev it up then seems to wind out alot before coming back to idle again. Not familiar enough with 2 strokes to know if this is normal or not. Any suggestions for a newbie on what to check? Any assistance will be appreciated.

The 250 Polaris is most likely sucking air somewhere, the rubber intake boot or crank seals. That's a first guess, FYI There are plenty of people that know about these things, Alot of people aren't online between 2:51 pm and 6:21 pm. You seemed kind of snippy there newbee. Doc

From your PM. The intake boot can be visually inspected as well as spraying carb cleaner around it while idling and see if the rpm's change. There is a crank seal on both sides of the engine 1 behind the primary clutch which can be tested the same way as the intake boot. The other is behind the pull start I haven't had to test of those yet.

Hey. I had the same problem. I have a 95 Boss 250 and it was the throttle not returning enough to hit the switch in the throttle assy on the handle bar. I adjusted the cables and all was ok. (its the ETC btw)
