I have a 2004 polaris 600 and last week end I got a new noise in the engine. It sounds like pinging valves and there are no adjustments. I use to work on them at a dealer 4 years ago and i never heard this noise. I was just going to get some ideas from others.

 

dont supose their not enough oil getting up to the top of the engine causing the excess tapping? just an idear.

 

when we tore apart the motor on the 700, found how easy it would be to plug those lifters. the new 800's have a bigger lifter. try changing your oil before you do anything though

 

I just so happened to change the oil the day before the problem started. Also this happens when the motor is hot and you put some strain on the motor does not do it in neutral. Anybody ever got bad gas that could cause this. To descibe the noise a lttle better it sounds like a two stroke just not as loud. Like i said i have worked on 100s of polaris and never had a quad with this problem. most of engine noise i heard was worn gear train and a couple of cases bad lifter and the bad lifter was more of a tick and a little loss of power. So i am lost and dont want to tear it down and it really not be an interal engine noise.

you dont think it would be weak gas making it ping from the not firing from not enough octang. we call it a spark knock.

 

Could be bad gas causing it to ping, try drainig and putting some premium in it, I run a tank of premium every so often.
