Default What gearing is everyone running?

I am currently running 14/38. This is my dune setup running 23x10.5x12 9 paddle Hauler extremes on the rear.

At little sahara (UT) I usually run 3rd gear (at about 5-6k rpm I beleive) up the face (right side where everyone drags...where the whoops are). Up the fingers I start in 2nd, shift to third at the bottom of the hill but usually shift to second so im not lugging 3rd all the way up it (3rd bogs down to like 5k rpms, where as 2nd I can put at the limiter if I want).

I have two aluminum 40 tooth rears, the 38 tooth rear as well as 14/15/16/17 fronts. Should I run 14/40 so that I can use 3rd on the fingers all the way up? Should I gear up to 15/16 in the front so 2nd is geared a lot higher?

Let me know what you guys are running for whp/tire setup/gearing as I think I could use a change to get the fastest time up the hills.

15/40 for the moment and has worked well in the past but I rode a 15/42 setup and have the new rear in the garage ready to be applied. Seemed to be less shifting and was able to pull the hills in third where on mine I would have to scream in second like you are doing now. Others are going to chime in with the same setup I believe. The majority of the duners run the 15/42 and are happy with it.

I run a 14/40 with 21x12x8 8 paddles. I run the Valley, right side of sand mountain with a strong 3rd gear. If I was you I would go to 22" extremes 8 paddle with your current gearing. Next time out I'm going to try 15/40 and see how it does.

Dude, with your set-up you should be ripping up that hill easy. Go with 15/40 to start out. You should pull 3rd solid with that gearing up the fingers. I had a stage 2 stock bore with 15/42 doing what you are describing on the fingers.....

I think these haulers are just a lot of paddle but I did dyno at 70whp with low/mid 60's torque....so its not like im trying to run 9 paddles on a stage I.

so with the idea that two rear teeth = one front tooth with a 14/37 setup (its either 37 rear or 38) I am actually 15/39 with a 23 inch tall 10.5 inch wide 9 paddle hauler extreme. I can pull out of the hole like crazy, but maybe i should up the tire pressure a tad to compensate the gearing to get the RPM I want up the hill.

Maybe I will just leave the gearing and see how it runs on the hill this year.

Now to think about it..im going to recount the teeth and make sure the 15 isnt on there... my buddies with 450' kitted bolt on yfz's (head porting and etc) were getting dusted by me even when I had to drop to 2nd gear. I COULD pull 3rd, but It felt a lot faster at the higher RPM in second than the lower rpm in 3rd.

What tire pressure do you guys run for all around duning/dragging?

I run 22/11/10 9 paddle Extremes also. So I can compare really close to your build. And I had these tires when I was at that hill with the Stage 2. I run the tires at 5 to6 PSI on my rides.

Alright I think ill just leave the gearing at what it is and make sure im not running to fat. This bike was only beaten by a crazy banshee...but everything else I was able to beat by a minimum of 1 bike length. Granted when we go there are not a TON of quads there...but some pretty decent setups.

I run a 16f 40r 22'' hauler trip buff 73 roll out 3rd gear at 9k rpm up sand MT NV you should try less paddles or more air in them to let them spin up the hill more

If you want to compare your gearing and tire size to stock (Cool to play with), here is a great little gearing calculator. http://www.ds650.net/gearingcalc.htm
