carrier bearings

here's the questions:
1) how much play should there be in the bearings?
2) how do you get the axle out?
when it was pretty new i added a + 6 swinger. well i cracked the hell out of it , so now i need a new one built. when it was new i took it apart but can't remember how. i thought it just slipped out but not sure. i am going with a +4 this time but while it is apart its time for some NEEDED maintenance. there is some side to side play in the carrier bearings but i'm not sure what is acceptable. any help would be appreciated.

lol I just made a few threads about this issue (search my name). To just get the axle out...remove the brake caliper (two bolts) - remove the axle nut (single bolt tightens it down...loosen that then loosen the nut with a pipe wrench). Put her up on jack stands and take the hubs off (its easier to just take the nut on the axle off and slide the hub off...so you dont have to unbolt the tire). Once hubs are off, pull the axle adjusting nut off (there is a washer and a metal ring you will have to open up and slide over its groove). Next tap the brake hub off (it can be a bear, as there is an o-ring in there) Sounds like you need to get the carrier out as well, so you will have to take off the mega-huge snap-ring on the left side of the carrier. Once this is off the bracket that holds the caliper will just slide off. Now the axle is free and should slide out (might need to tap on it with a block of wood/hammer). Now is the tricky part (if your carrier is at-all stuck which most likely it is this might be tough). Tap on the bearing carrier from the left hitting toward the right (only way the carrier will come out of the swinger). I had to use a block of maple and a 12 pound sledge!
Once its out replace your bearings. You will need to remove both seals (one on each side) then pull out the bearings. Once bearings are out tape out the races (the thin metal rings the bearings sit against inside the carrier). Just clean everything out really well and then pack the bearings and reverse everything for the install!

thanks for the input. brake rotor etc. is already off but the axle will not slide out. i was not sure how much force was needed to beat it into submision.
