aftermarket exhaust...

i have a Big Gun, full stainless on my 02 700, pretty nice growl at idle... but seems to maybe drone a little bit running at about 45mph... and when i back off the gas the bike seems to backfire alot, i dunno what could cause this?.... i think i may need a new dohnut gasket at the y-pipe aswell due to a little rattling.

From my wrenching days, a Backfire is caused by a lean condition.. That usually points to an exhaust leak as the primary cause.
Even if you don't hear the leak it could be seeping enough cool air when you let off (pressure change too) to lean out the pipe and thus cause a backfire.

I agree with BBFT....make sure you have no leaks and your jetting is right. Even properly jetted you will have some "backfire" when you let off the throttle as it is pretty much impossible for a carbureted bike to adjust to the sudden change in air/fuel mixture.

thanks guys...
i'll have to give my exhaust a good inspection before the upcoming season starts... still 12feet of snow in my front yard!
as for jetting... how do i know what jetting should be done to the bike?.. i ride 0-2000ft sea level... i bought the bike used and the exhaust was already on and i would probably assume there was no jetting done to it.

For a good foundation and understanding, you could go to mikuni's website...they have detailed instructions and explain jetting. Some other people here may chime in and have even better sites. I learned the hard way through the years of 2 strokes. Another idea is to contact the mfr of the pipe....they usually have tech support that can tell you what size jet to use....and then there's the great bunch here that should be able to do the same. I might start a new thread and title it 2002 sp700 jetting....that might get more hits. I'm sure you are needing to rejet it if there have been any changes to the intake. The exhaust, however, may not require it as the carb does not know what is happening "downstream".
