Default K&N air filters

In general, do they make much difference?

Not that I can tell but you can use them over and over again so the convenience is worth it to me. You'd probably a dyno to really see any difference.

ive got 4,000 miles on my stock air filter that i clean my self with soap and water, put the foam oil on it and good to go. just as easy to clean as the k&n. k&n is only helpful if you do all the other stuff like new jets, exhaust, possible engine rebuild,ect... waste of money IMO.

I was just trying to get back some power that the mudlites I'm getting will rob, with a 300 I can't affort to loose too much.

I've read a couple of different studies that found that K&N etc have a couple of drawbacks.

1. The K&N doesn't filter as well as a paper filter letting more dirt be ingested into the engine.

2. While K&N flow better in a pristine state, after they've accumulated a relatively small amount of dust they don't flow as well as paper.

While I run K&N in my truck and I saved money over having to buy paper filters I can't say it is more convenient. You have to wash the K&N, wait for it to dry, oil it and reinstall it. With a paper element you just take it out of the box and swap it out with the old one.

Like I've said I've ran K&N in my street vehicles for years but I don't see myself running one in my ATV or ever putting another in a street vehicle unless it was strictly a race car.

If your looking to improve gas mileage, I can tell you there all about the same paper and washable.

I did see a slight improvemet in the power, but it was on my corvette, it did feel different, more lively.

But the cost will get you, you could buy alot of paper filters, for the cost of 1 K&N.

I find on one of the paper elements I have, it can be cleaned, useing brake or carb cleaner, I wash it and blow it out, wash from the inside out, and blow it the same way, and let it dry.

I have been useing the same filters in my Kohler engine for 10 years, I have 2, I just rotate them once and awhile.

I have a K&N and a UNI. For grassy, non dusty riding, I throw in the K&N, and for rough rocky dusty riding I use the UNI. The K&N is fine for the most part, but I would carry a stock or foam filter incase you hit some dusty riding.
