Default Polaris 500 or 800

I bought a 2WD Rancher 420 a few months ago and have been riding double with my son. He likes 4-wheeling. I want to get a new quad and let my son ride the Honda.

I have read and reviewed a lot and am now trying to decide between Sportsman models. I have toyed with a BF 750i but think I am past that now.

I visited my local dealer. He said his best offer is for leftover 2007 models.

Sportsman 500 Deluxe - $7335 plus sales tax...7800 out the door

Sportsman 800 Deluxe - $8478 plus tax...9000 out the door

Here's the dealer's rationale for buying the Deluxe: Both are EFI, have nicer wheels than std sportsman, and include a factory installed winch.

I have been lurking her a while, reading advice given to others. I am wondering if this offer is a good or even decent deal. I live in eastern NC and mostly trail ride, mud, trees, etc.

Would I be better served getting a standard Sportsman, try to get a 500 dollar rebate (don't take the Polaris winch), and have the dealer install a better winch (Warn, maybe)?

I feel like EFI is a good thing. Is it worth the extra upcharge?

Would the 800 drink a lot more fuel than the 500?

Will I feel like I missed out if I buy a 500 and pass on the 800? Many of the trails in local riding areas are tight and winding. Will the 800 be tougher to handle than the 500?

I test drove the 500 but not the 800. I really like the feel of the Sportsman suspension over the solid axle Honda. I was afraid if I drove the 800 I'd buy it after feeling the addl power.

The local dealer didn't have anything between the 500 and 800. Is it worthwhile looking for a 2007 700 EFI and adding a winch?

Polaris financing is very good right now. At those rates I'd prefer to finance over cash sale.

Your first question should be .....Do you need and want the extra power and is the extra cash an issue to dish out!!....................Also remember if your riding with the Honda........Fuel may become an issue if on long trips.!!......Caper......

you may want to check out of state, I drove 2.5 hours and paid $7,100 Otd for an 07 800. I have even found 08 800's for $6,883 OTD in tn

I agree, you can get better prices. But I do very much second caperinmuskoka advice, my rancher goes much farther than my polaris when with my son's on long rides. I bring an extra two gallons and then it's still not even!

Those prices are outrageous........find a different dealer. If you've ridden a Brute Force, then you know what kind of power to expect with the SP800. The 800 uses lots more fuel than the 500. The EFI is nice, I prefer having it over my carbed 500. Having both the 500 and 800 right now, if I had to sell one of them, it would have to be the 500. I like the 800 that much.

Good luck.

I agree with Sheep, you can find a better deal. I bought my 07 800 Stealth with winch for 7,000 out the door in June of 07. Test drive and make your choice ride safe.

If you're dropping all that money on an ATV go ahead and get the 800(760).

I doubt a year later you'll be sitting around saying, "you know I like this ATV but it has just too much power...I should have gone with the 500.".

I'd also look for another dealer. That sounds high.

the efi is a joke,i would whether have a carb anytime, the only thing the efi would be good for is if you ride different altitudes, like start at 2,000 feet and ride up to 8,000 feet,it would stay running good,if you don't ride like that the efi is just something else to go wrong and cost alot to fix,,,you said deluxe models, are we talking about 2007 models, because the 2008's have adc and the same stuff the 07's do,if i was you i would buy a 2008,the 500 is all you need. wayout,out...............

well i agree those prices are not good. the 800 is alot harder on gas then the 500 for sure and wont go the distance w/ the honda milage wise. to me (having both) their is no comparing the efi to the carb its EFI all the way. the power differncew between the 2 is alot of bottom end and some faster speeds up top but if you have been happy w/ the 450 honda go w/ the 500 as you wont be disappointed and its way more comfortable then the honda. buy the sp. 500 at a better price then that though. the 07' year delux was a way for polaris to make more money that year.
