What tires should I buy - New Polaris
#1
I am pretty new to the ATV world, and need help. I need new tires/wheel for my 2008 X2, but don't know what to do. Should I stick with the stock 12" rim, or upgrade to 14"? Should I stay with the stock 25" height, or upgrade to 26" or 27"?
Also, what are good general duty tires? I ride on my lawn a lot, so I am afraid of a very aggressive tread pattern. I don't ride in deep mud, so I am looking for a good general tire that is comfortable to ride on streets as well as hard pack dirt. I also don't want to rip up my grass. Anyone out there that knows this stuff well that can help?

Does that have 489s on it? They're an excellent dirt, trail, and all around tire. They'll even do some mud and snow riding. My oldest Sportsman 500 had Tracker Ps on it which were good tires. After 4,000 miles mine still had more tread than my friend's Grizzly did brand new. Polaris always has the best tires. My TrailBlazer had 489s just like a Scrambler. No complaints with either stock tire. I put a set of Goodyear MudRunners on my second Sportsman 500. They tore up the trails like a roto-tiller. I asked my friend behind me if they kicked up a lot of dust. He said the kicked up dust, dirt, rocks, tree roots, etc. I'm never going to waste money on mud tires again, because I only really needed them once in 11 years, and that was just to prove I could go through a 10 mile swamp when everyone else took the easy way around it. My new quad has the 26 inch PXT Radials. So far I really like them.
My advice would be to save your money and stick with the stock tires and see how they perform for you. You could always buy something else later, but never go more than 1 inch taller than stock. It can cause rubbing on the body if you don't install a lift kit, and it will change your gear ratio. A 27 inch tire is 8% taller than a 25 inch tire so you would need a clutch kit with them, but 26's would be fine.

Jeez. I just posted seconds ago. I think 498s are one of the best dirt tires ever. They were stock on my trailblazer and I rode it mostly on dirt, but in mud and snow too. The only reason I don't buy some nice wheels is that I hit a lot of stumps and rocks, and my rims take a beating. Cast aluminum looks great but I can straighten the edge of the steel rims with vise-grips. I would like nicer wheels but I'm afraid they wouldn't look good for long. There's another thread for Polaris tires and wheels. Some of the other opinions are a lot different from mine. Check it out.
