Default 1986 Moto4 225 (YFM225T)

This quad has a high and low range on the transmission. The low range works perfectly, but in the high range there is a grinding noise from the transmission. After attempting to operate the quad in high range, I found metal shavings in the oil.

The quad works fine in low range, and I'm using it that way for now, but would like to repair whatever is wrong with the high range. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

I've got the service manual, and I suppose I'll just have to tear into it to see what's wrong, but it sure would be helpful to have some idea of what I'm looking for.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sam

vin:JY42HTWOXJCXXXXXX

I believe the J means its an 1988...

Perhaps you and i can do the tear down together... I just bought mine this weekend for $75....

Please please keep me in the loop...

Where did you get the manual to do the tear-down...?

Richard

Hi Richard! Looks like we both have similar problems.

I believe the YFM225's are just virtually identical for the years 1986-1988. I got the service manual on ebay. It's on CD and was $9.99 plus $2.96 shipping. The seller has another one listed. See ebay Item No. 360052093727. The seller is "repairpromanuals". I just got mine and haven't spent a lot of time looking at it, but it seems to be pretty detailed and has plenty of illustrations.

Parts for these quads are readily available, it seems, both used and new, so that shouldn't be a problem. All the remains for me is to clear some space in my garage, and set aside some time to do the repair. I'm hoping that I can get to it soon. How about you?
