Water pump still leaking????
#1
I have a 2000 Sportsman 500 and the water pump is leaking out the weep hole. I replaced the washer seal behind the propeller but it still leaks. Is there another seal that I don't know about. It's the only one I see on the diagram.

I had the exact same problem with my 700. I tried the same seal you tried and it didn't work either. I done something that I shouldn't have done but it worked. I put JB Weld over the hole. lol Hey, it worked. I run it for two years and over 2000 miles like that and never had a problem again.

Your mechanical seal is what is causing the leak - this is the ceramic seal with the spring behind the washer you replaced. Look at the parts diagram under CRANKCASE , you will find a part called SEAL, MECHANICAL
Putting JB Weld over the hole is NOT a good solution as the cooling system runs under pressure and will eventually cause the oil seal behind the mechanical seal to fail, causing coolant to enter the crankcase - possibly ruining the engine if not caught before damage is done...............

Ok, Thanks! I see what you are talking about now. Is there special way or tool to get it out or should I just be able to pull it out?

I just use a flat screw driver and GENTLY pry the lip up on the seal and carefully pull it out without scratching the pump shaft. Use a socket or a front wheelbearing race from a polaris to drive the new seal in EVENLY! lube the ceramic seal and install and hope for the best! good luck (Polaris recomends removing the entire engine casting with the water and oil seal in it to get the waterseal out! )

My cylmers manual says you have to split the crank case to change the mechanical seal,is this not so? Of course they said I had to take the drive pulleys off the the ATV to change the starter which was BS.
