Trying to replace the timing chain but cannot get the nut loose on the end of the crankshaft so I can get access to the tensioner and chain. Is it right or left hand threads and do I need a wheel puller to pull the drum?

 

Which cover are you taking off? the right or left side?

 

The side with the pull rope. I don't think you can get to the timing chain from the other side. Already have the pull rope cover off, I need to remove the next part to get to the bottom timing chain sprocket on the crankshaft.

 

They are right hand threads. I use a impact wrench.

 

How did you keep the crank from turning? I have the motor disassembled and I don't want to damage the rod or rod bearings.

 

The recoil is on the right side right? I think the cam chain is on the left side of the motor. If there is any gears showing put a penny in them and that should stop it from turning over, or put a rope down the spark plug hole, then when the piston comes up it will hit the rope.

 

The recoil (pull rope assembly) is on the left side along with the timing chain. The clutch and oil pump are on the right side when sitting on the ATV. I need to remove the nut and cover located behind the starter pulley and cooling fan to access the lower timing chain sprocket. Another problem is that I'm replacing the piston and rings, so the jug is off exposing the connecting rod and I don't want to screw up the rod bearing trying to remove this nut to access the timing chain.

 

How will removing the nut screw up the bearrings? Another way to hold the motor from turning over is to stick a long extention or screw drive through the top of the rod if you have the piston off. and I think it will come down and stop it from turning.

 

What I mean is I don't want to screw up the rod and/or rod bearings. Putting a screw driver in the rod could easily screw up the rod where the wrist pin will not fit properly. I'm also concerned about putting any sideways pressure on the rod causing excessive play in the rod and rod bearing. Thanks alot though, it sounds about like the only way I can do it. I'll just put something around the screw driver and be veryyy careful.

 

Or put a penny in some gears that are showing or maybe even both. I've done it both ways and it works. I don't think you will screw up the bearrings by putting side pressure on it. Any more questions let me know.
