My review on SST pipes
#1
Well I was finally able to get out and try the SST pipes/silencers on the Banshee.
Heres the deal.... I have 260 mains in the carbs, wasnt able to put in the 30 pilots since Yamaha ordered the wrong part, grrr. I also have a Pro Flow intake system on it as well. Thats all the engine mods.
When we first arrived I cranked it up and let it warm for about 10 mins. After that I took off up a the dirt road easy as first, it was sputtering a lil bit so I took it easy. On my way back I kicked it in and it was still sputtering. Told my friend about it and he said to just try and take off the airbox lid and see what happens. (He is on a Banshee with toomeys and has had problems as well).
I took off the lid, fired it up and took off again. This increase in air really helped out a bunch. I was in 2nd and then gunned it, and wow! talk about arm jerking power! then 3rd, 4th and 5th then had to stop really fast, turned around and came back. Powerband was great, higher revs and tons of power.
Afer about 5 mins of playing around I checked the plugs to see how it was running, pulled both plugs and they were a tan color. Duane was having probs with his toomeys as well, he felt like his top end was dying, he messed around with the air screw a lil then we checked his plugs and same color.
Well we took off riding around just having fun. The SST's have a very high rev range but seem to not have much of a bottom end, maybe with the 30 pilots it will give me some more, who knows. I couldnt get it to ride a wheelie while in low revs but in mid to high if I gassed it, it was effortless.
Question: FMF gave me the 260 mains but no 30 pilots, why would they want me to run 30 pilots if they are not going to include them as well?
Aslo I emailed them about having a Pro Flow kit on as well and asked for jetting suggestions, told them all about my quad and where I ride (elevation). They said with the pro flow kit run 280-300 mains and a 30 pilot w/air box off.
Well with the box on and 260 mains and 25 pilot it sputered threw all gears, w/ air box off and 260 mains and 25 pilots it ran fine with a tan/brown plug color.
Whats the deal?
Other than that the pipes work great.

Hey man whats up...I would be careful and NOT run the airbox lid off. With the extremely dusty coditions down here it won't be long until you would need a new rebuild. Talk to CTBanshee he can tell you. Up the jet size to about 300's and the pilots to about 30, remove the snorkel...Dennis Kirk sells them real cheap...check out there catalog...I went to the dealership at first and charged me $10 just for the mains and on top of that they were the wrong one's so I had to return them....going to order from Dennis Kirk. Did alot of people show up down there at Muenster???Did you like riding up there? Whats the deal on the truck?

Hey mgrigsby,
There was only 3 of us at Muenster and I loved that place! And yes I finally got a truck, red as red can be 2001 Ford F150 supercab.
I ordered the pilots from yamaha and they were the wrong freagin ones, really ticked me off when I got to the house, they were closed by then.
The airbox should be ok with the lid off, the pro flow intake filter has the pro design filter with a outerwear, so I think it would be alright, but if others say its not then I suggest I listen.
Not sure about a ride this upcoming weekend for me but hopefully next.

You're lucky you didn't fry your motor! That "sputtering" is probably from a severe lean out condition! If you're going to run with the airbox lid off, and you are near sea level, then your mains should be at least 300's (320's for dunes). I totally disagree with the comment that it's bad to run with the airbox lid off. If the motor is getting dirty, then the filter is NOT WORKING! It has nothing to do with the airbox lid. You didn't mention if you have K&N or foam. Foam is much better for dust, K&N needs a prefilter - I don't like K&N's because I've had them pass dust and dirt. Throw that lid away, it's too restrictive. Having the lid off is worth about 2 hp (once jetted properly).

Well Shawn i'll agree with Sandman throw the lid in the garage somewhere. I've ran without a lid for let's see about 4 years and no problems. I've got a K&N and a outerwear. I ride all kinds of dusty and sandy places and have had no problems. Maybe i'm just lucky but I doubt it. I've had the bike for 5+ years and rebuilt it once, only because I had someone that would do some internal work for a good price. It's all about maintenance, you take care of it and it'll take care of you. I clean my filter regularly, it's doesn't take long. Just like changing the oil regularly, it's cheap preventitive maintenance. I ride all the same places you do and no ill effects so far. Did Duane get the popping fixed, because I told him he needed to take care of that before the motor popped on him. After riding all day in the mud out there at RR there wasn't a speck of mud or dust to speak of on the filter. Good luck with the Banshee, it'll be handful now. When you going to the dunes with us?

Jen, what size mains and pilots do you run? I'm in the same prediciment as Shawn...I run the Fatty's with 260 mains with the airbox lid on with K&N filter and it seems to run a bit slugish...should I trash the lid also and bump up the jet sizes? I'm ready for a dune trip myself!!!!ALL my buddies have been there and said it was complete Mayham!!!!!! When are we all meeting up at Shady Grove and testing the limits of our suspension?

Hey Mike. With the pipes I never could get mine to breath good enough with a lid on. The prefilter is a good investment if you don't have one already. It may have something to do with the pipes too about the jetting. I've always had Toomeys. Before I switched over to the single carb, I ran 270 mains and no lid and the K&N. Some folks don't like the single carb, but it usually depends on what kind of motor work you've had done. I know CTBanshee said he didn't like his, but I love mine. He has a different motor setup than I do though. Just keep an eye on your plug color. Have you not been to the dunes at all? If not you have to go. Little Sahara isn't as big as Glamis or anything but it is closer, and it is a rip. I like holidays, it's crowded but there are all kinds of machines up there showing off. Trying to plan a trip for Easter or Memorial Day. We should all hook up and go. Jetting is tricky, sometimes you just have to take a day and tinker. Most people i've heard of having problems with K&N filters and no lids is because they don't keep a check on it to make sure it fits tight. I've talked to people that have completely lost theirs. I've never had mne come loose or fall off. You know of anyone interested in a shaved banshee head? Take care, keep the wheels spinnin'.

Well here's a California boys 2 cents!
I agree with the majority. Throw that lid as far away as possible. If you are getting dirt or dust in the engine, then maintenance is a problem. I have tried it all, and the lid is not a good thing. I have eliminated the airbox all together and run a Toomey 2 into 1 FOAM filter. It works great. I used to use a K&N outerwear, but have decided that the mesh outerwear was too restictive too. I have switched to the uni foam outerwear, and have noticed a noticeable increase in power.
If you do regular maintenance, you should not have any problems. With the foam outerwear, you will probably only have to clean the outerwear, most of the times. The foam catches the majority of the dirt. Dont forget to jet for the extra airflow you will get. I run 310 mains w/ 30 pilots.
Did someone say "GLAMIS"????
GLAMIS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the replies Jen, Mike, and Sandman.
Heres the basic setup: FMF SST's 260 mains, need to put in 30 pilots, airbox lid off running Pro Flow intake system with Pro Design filter (yellow) and Pro Design outerwear (orange). With the airbox lid on it sputtered like crazy and wouldnot run in any gear, with it off, it ran great, checked plugs, good color, didnt see or feel a lean or rich condition and no popping sound or no sluggish response.
I do have a small leak near the head that I need to fix.
Also Duanes bike still pops everyonce in a while, he jacked with the airscrew and it did fix it a little bit, he still has work to do with it. He also said it felt like his top end was dying out but his plugs are a good color.
Email him and see whats up.
Again, thanks for the info.
