I am looking at purchasing a 400ex. To fit within my budget most have been '99-'01. I know 400ex's are very reliable quads, but how old is too old? What are the common things that wear out by this time? I've been checking bearings, tie rods, sprockets, and air filters on those I've looked at. I've noticed certain common areas for surface rust, especially on those that have seen sand. What else should I be watching for on these older quads?

Thanks!

I just got a 2001 400ex and it was in great shape, but had be sitting for 3 yrs. The carb was a little gummed up, but i blow it out and mix some top engine cleaner in the gas and it cleaned it out. I pay close attention to the the rear end carrier and bearings in it from they are common to go out.

I have a 2000 400ex and have replace the rear bearings and carrier.
Just replaced the chain and sprockets.
With regular maintenance they will last forever.
