Valve adjustment on Prairie
#1
I've got a '08 kawasaki praire 360, and i've never done valve adjustments before, and i'm wondering how exactly do you set the engine at TDC so i can check and adjust the 2 valves, and do i need any special tools for this? I really need some help

Assuming the 08 Prairie is similar to the 03 model, there are no special tools needed except for a set of feeler gauges. Removal of the fuel tank and some cowling will be required. Timing is done by lining up a "T" timing mark under an inspection plug on the left side of the engine, then using the feeler gauge. Adjustment is done on the compression stroke. On the compression stroke the valve springs will have slight play; on the exhaust stroke there is no "wiggle".
Not a difficult job, but I am concerned that you would have to do a valve adjustment on an 08. Additionally, poor adjustment can cause engine wear and damage. If you have never Timed an ATV before, I suggest you get an experienced cycle mechanic to assist the first time.....and by all means, get yourself a Haynes or Clymer Service Manual.
