Default cam shaft question

what is the best way to determine you need to replace your cam shaft? I visually inspected mine yesterday and it is smooth until you see the lobes....the lobes appear to be a little rougher then the rest of the shaft and there were a few shavings on the side of the lobes?

current problem with sportsman 500....takes a long time to start, bakfires when given throttle during starting attempt and spits out a mist of gas in air box, if/when it starts you can not go faster then a slow walk or it bogs out.

talked to previous owner last night and he said the "kids" said it started to run rough the last couple of times they rode it.

And if it is cam shaft...whats the best place to buy from. Bike Bandit has it for $220 ??

thanks again for all your insight and help

Sure sounds like a worn exhaust lobe to me. Along with the cam make sure you install a new cam follower for the exhaust side. As far as prices I don't know, give RCR a shot. If he can't do it he will get you going in the right direction. Doc

The camshaft and exhaust rocker arm are not high profit items, so finding it much less than the $220 ( about $30 over dealer cost) and $60 for the exhaust rocker arm ( about $10 over dealer cost) is going to be hard. Normally at least 1/3 of the price of a part is dealer profit......
