Default (Help) Buying a Blaster Need Advice

Hey guys I'm new here, Currently I was looking at buying a 1996 Yamaha Blaster. The bike is also coming with a 92 blaster for parts no pretty much just the frame and crap on that one... Anyhow he just took it out of hibernation today and started it up... It drives buy it takes a while to take off if you just give it gas she revs up... In order to get it to moved you gotta give it gas real easy. Anyhow other than that the back brakes are done and where the front pipe connects to the back pipe (The section that slides into each other) is loose as well.

So with all that said my friend seems to think that the problem with the throttle and revving seems to be clutch related (anyone have advice).

He was 1200$ for the bike and he would get the "Clutch problem Fixed"

Also i forgot that he just replaced the piston in the thing cause the other one broke near the base...

Is this a good deal or will i be having major problems down the road?

Thanks in Advance!

As far as reving and not moving, letting them sit for a long period of time will do that. They are a wet disc clutch system and they will dry up. You also need to make sure the clutch boss or springs aren't broken. As far as the piston, that is a common problem on them. they always break about an inch or little less from the bottom. One thing that you want to look at is the bottom of the motor. Once in a while when the piston breaks the larger pieces will go to the bottom of the engine case and jam up. Just look at the bottom and make sure that it isn't cracked or broke. It probably isn't or it wouldn't run correctly but just make sure.
If he made sure the case was clean of all the piston pieces or had it split and cleaned you should be ok and depending on how you ride it could be good for quite a while. You didn't specify if he had it bored or not, not that it makes any difference but to put a loose piston in can be a problem. that is why they usually break in the first place, they get worn and loose.
I mean no disrespect but 1200 is plenty for a 96 unless there are extra's like nerf bars that come with it. I paid 1300 for a 2003 last summer that was in real good condition and was bone stock with no extra's.
There is alot of info that would take forever to post on here. If he had the clutch out or replaced any on it there is an internal setting that needs to be just right as well.
We race quad mx and my oldest (15) rides a modified blaster. If you would like to chat more feel free to send me a PM and we can go further into it.
Good luck

I wouldn't buy it for more than $600-800. My buddy bought a nice, clean '03 Blaster for $1000 and it didn't need anything. I think this one's a rip-off.

Watch out for that clutch. If a wet clutch sits for too long with out any oil moving around in it, the steel plates will bond with the fiber plates and you will burn the clutch up quick.

If you ask me any Pre-03 stock Blaster is not worth more than 750 bucks. Now if it has alot of go fast goodies on it then the price would be right...But bone stock...NOPE!Think about it...Its 13 years old and sold new in 96 for 2900 bucks.I bought my 03 new in the fall of 02 for 3300 out the door.Your looking at a quad with drum brakes that are notorious for going bad.Upgrading them to disc brakes alone will set you back 400 bucks.I have seen 03 660r Raptors sell for 1800 bucks.Wait til you get about 2500 dollars and your atv options will increase greatly.
