Default 300EX pipe guru's

Guys I looked at a used 300EX that I really liked, but I walked away to dwell on it... and I have been doing so for a while now.

The reason is that the bike was stock other than tires/wheels and nerfs. But then I noticed the heat shield was missing off the head pipe... and when I noticed this it lead me to notice that the right fender had been trimmed on the inside a little.... a c cut out... and after another once around it, I noticed the right rear fender was trimmed above the muffler...

Ahh... at some point the quad had some sort of aftermarket exhaust on it... and the stock exhaust had been re-installed...

But what worried me about it is.... what aftermarket exhaust for the 300EX would require plastic trimming for the head pipe and muffler??? Maybe one that wasn't for the 300EX???

Anyone aware of an aftermarket full system for the 300EX that would require such plastic trimming?

My boy had a cobra exhaust on for a while and then bought a big gun and that is what is on it now. We trimmed the right fender at the bottom because it was resting on the head pipe and started to melt the edge. Not sure about the rear fender.

Almost every 300ex I've seen with an aftermarket pipe has a burn mark or melted spot because the new pipe goes too close to the plastic, I avoided this on my son's by installing some heat reflecting fabric tape to the underside of the fender in the area of the pipe. Several years later, not one little burn or heat warp, still looks like new. I wouldn't worry about the cutout, he was probably trying to get rid of the melted spot, 300ex plastic is cheap, you can always replace it.

i just put on a white brothers E-series on my 87 250X today and noticed the same thing on the rear fender. I bought some header wrap to wrap part of the pipe. Does any one know how well this will work?
