In over my head??

I just bought a 1987 Mojave 250 that I thought was a steal and now I am not so certain. It currently does not run and hasn't since 2005, the previous owner said it had a bad crank bearing which he replaced the entire crank assembly and both bearings, but could not get it to run afterward. He thought it might be carb related as it is getting spark. Well I got it home and changed the oil and found very small brass like shavings in the oil and filter housing. Is this impending doom or leftovers? I am kind of freaked out and don't want to invest a whole bunch of time in it if it's going to grenade itself soon. I have the Clymer's manual for it and am now looking for all the information I can find. If anyone can point in any direction for online microfiche or other views as this thing is in pieces and I will need as much help as possible to get it put back together. Thank you.

Well my experence with metal shavings in the oil is not good by any means! i bought a 2000 kawi mojave about 2yrs ago and the previous owner said he had replaced th whole top end and i picked it up a day or so later and rode it for about 2hrs and it just lost all power then stoped running and would not start then i pulled the valve cover and noticed the cams were totaly destroyed then i changed the oil and found lots of metal shavings in it 2 make a long story short when he put the cams in he never broke them in so they were already bad wen he gave it to me needless to say by the end of it all i had as much into it as i paid $800 so i doubt those metal shavings are leftovers (just my experience)

here is a site with the microfiche of your machine: http://www.kawasaki.com/kawasa...87&ModelCode=KSF250A1
and if you look around on this site for about 2 seconds you will find a microfiche for the mojave (my bookmark is saved for a lakota) http://fiche.ronayers.com/Inde.../Camshaft(s)/Tensioner Hope this helps you.
