I recently drove a 2003 Honda Rancher ES and at times it would not downshift. I had to turn the engine/key to off and turn the key back to accessory to get the gears to change down, one at a time.

Any ideas what this could be?

What size did the 2003 Rancher ES's come as (350 cc)?

The gear position indicator should have flashed a code ...

 

Yes the 2003 was a 350 ... 2000-06 all had the 350 engine ..

 

How does the flashing occur?

flash - flash - flash = 3
....pause....
flash - flash = 2

Code is 32?

I will check what it is next time.

Is there a list I can cross reference once I get the flashing code?

 

The first set of flashes will be the new code the second set will be an older code .. I would erase the codes and re-test the bike , to erase the codes while the error code/s are flashing just push the up/down buttons at the same time and hold then pushed for about 3 seconds ..

Code 3 is angle sensor ..
Code 2 is up/down shift switches ..
