600 Griz wont start but will
#1
I am working on a 600 Griz that will not start with the starter button. No spark to the plug BUT, It will start easy with the pull starter. He tells me it will start with the button when it gets hot. A strange thing I noticed is the oil light will not come on when you just turn the switch on but will come on when you push the starter button. Could the starter button be causing the kill switch to function when it is pushed? Or is there some kind of relay I need to check? Thanks.

Thought of that and hooked up jumper cables to a new battery and no difference. Could be dirty connections? But I thought the starting system and the ignition system were separate. Ignition running off the stator. CDI problems maybe?

Could be dirty connections. I would not assume that hooking it to a new battery would tell much. If you hooked it up to a running vehicle then maybe you would get enough juice to tell. The starter draws a lot of juice and there might not be enough left over to correctly power the ignition system. Can you install the new battery and make sure it is fully charged to test it?

There may b a fuse in the starter button on the handle bars. if not u might want to start tracing the wiring from the button back to the starter there could b a problem in the wiring harness.

Believe or not it was the stator! Replaced just the pick up coil and that didn't do it. Start with rope and not the electric starter? Spooky. And yes I did the ohm test. Passed the first time I did it but not the second. Put on a new stator for the guy a couple of years ago so it was the last thing I would suspect. It also would run sometimes and not others but would always start when cold. Think I did my last Yamaha electrical problem. Don't need the aggravation. This part time retirement thing is suppose to be fun.
