uprgrading from 400ex to a 450r

so im thinking about trading in my 2005 400ex for a hold over 2007 450r with electric start. the asking price is very reasonable under $6000. all i have to do is wait for the application to go through tomorrow. is it worth trading in my ex for a 450r? i ride some technical trails, sand pits, roads. pretty much everything. my ex does everything pretty well. its been a great trail bike, but i just feel like i want something more out of it. i do have some mods done to my 400ex listed in my profile. will a stock 450 have more performance than my 400 with the mods listed below? anyone have have anything they want to add about how 450r's ride compared to a 400? i hate to see it go, but i think the next step up is a 450. thanks for any reply.

it will be a nice improvement
I love mine haha, I beat my friends 440ex with a stage 2 hotcam and rev box and hmf slip on, in a drag race, on take off it was pretty close but I got the hole shot and by 3rd gear I was just plain gone.

You will love the 450 but, start stearing clear of those technical trails if they are too slow. 450's don't like going slow. They'll get hot fast and they like to rev for there power. You can feel out the trails and see which you can handle with her. Not much I ride that I can't handle with the yfz.

The 450 does not like to go slow!!! So, on a technical trail you will need to do all kinds of clutch slipping...and that will get old real real fast!
But in open country, the 450 flies!

Go with the 450 if you want better handling and more speed. I agree with Koopa, there isn't much out there a 450 can't handle. You could easily throw a couple grand at the current Honda and not be able to equal a basically stock 450R. On the other hand, most trail riding can only be done so fast, and any sport over 400cc is plenty fast enough for recreational trail riding.

so this morning i went to the bank paid off my 400ex loan, and headed to the honda dealer to talk some figures. while i was driving there i suddenly realized that the 400ex was MINE, all paid for. so i continued to the honda dealer, while i was in there i asked them about trading my 2001 polaris trailblazer 250. they said they would take it in for trade. so i thought to my self that hmmm... they have a 2007 honda rancher 420 foot shift. so i went and got my 250 TB, and $4049 OTD i had a 2007 honda rancher 420 foot shift. honestly i couldnt be happier with the 4-wheel drive. the rancher suits the trails where i live so much better than a 450r would have. i agree with scooter86 that trail riding can only be done so fast, and well when i ride with a bunch of 300ex's im already faster than they are. so thank you everyone for your imput on my topic, and i realize that i totally went the other way with my purchase, but that rancher is awesome!!! thanks again

You will need to do more frequent oil changes than with the EX. All these engines with little slipper pistons (not just the Honda) tolerate a lot of compression blow-by, so the combustion mixture rapidly contaminates (dilutes) the oil. Never hurts to do a valve adjustment either.

Whew, 450R to a 420 Rancher!! Well, I would say you made a much better upgrade from the TB than would have from the 400EX! Good luck with the new ride, break her in hard!
