Some good general reads on oils:

Look for a motorcycle specific oil that is rated API SG/JASO MA. Beyond that, the synthetics are superior to plain old petroleum oil, and the ester synthetics are superior to the other two types of synthetics.

If you are on a budget and want a reasonably priced petroleum oil, I recommend Maxima Premium. For a little more money, you can get Maxima Blend, which is a petroleum oil fortified with synthetic esters.

If you are a recreational rider and just want the best protection available for your engine, then Maxima Extra ester synthetic.

If you are looking for performance, then Redline (JASO MB yet wet clutch safe!) or Maxima Ultra (or Maxima 530MX for very cold weather). These ester synthetics are on the cutting edge of recent developments! They are very slick and contain orgainc friction modifiers, that won't make a wet clutch slip. Yes, we can now have the advantage of less friction and have a wet clutch too!

Plus, Redline and Maxima have the best high pressure/anti-wear additive packages in the business.

I am running Redline in most everything, and I am seeing an increase in horsepower/torque, and the engine revs up faster....it's the real deal!!!

As for the weight of oil to run....in most of the country 10W40 is a good summer oil. If you are in the very hot south, then maybe a 15W50 during the hottest times of the year.

In colder weather 10W30, or if it is really cold then 5W30.

valvoline makes a atv oil now. They sell it at autozone for around $4 a quart. Good stuff and won't break the bank. Good for wet clutches

run it in my ds650. Great oil. I think it only comes in 10w-40. But that is what most american atv's take anyways. I definatelty recommend it.

i tend to use Honda oil for my honda, polaris synthetic gold for my scrammy.

Or maxima for either, good stuff

you really cant go wrong, its a quad..

just stay away from car oils, additives, and stick to either regular oil or synthetic, and stay with what you pick from then on.
