1996 Fourtrax 300 noises
#1
Hello, I am new to the forum and am in need of some help.
I recently purchased a 1996 Fourtrax 300 from my uncle that purchased it new. I got a great deal on it ($1700)with new tires and battery. It is in very good condition. It was mainly used for deer hunting.
I did change all the fluids, adjusted all brakes, adjusted valves, and replaced some o-rings and small things. It starts with first push of the start button and runs excellent. But, it has a few noises I want to fix.
First, when coasting downhill in neutral and turning either direction, there is a light grinding in the cv joints. I have read that this normal for this model because of the limited slip axle. Is this the case?
Also, there is a knocking sound in the low end (clutch area) if you hit the throttle quickly. It sound like a plastic screwdriver handle tapping on the side cover. I was told by a Honda mechanic that it is the centrifugal clutches worn. Does this sound right? I do have a repair manual and am mechanically inclined, but do not want to spend $200 + in parts and not fix the problem. Also, I have notice the past couple of times that I have started it, that when I kick it into gear, it doesn't want to go. Afters it warms, it is fine. It does not slip at all.
Thanks,
