Brake locked up
#1
Hi
I have a 92 Bayou and after sitting for a few weks my rear brake is locked up. I cannot squeexe the handle at all it is fully locked. It happened after I got back from Iraq. I drained some fluid to get it to let off then refilled it and it worked fine for a few days but after sitting a month or so it is locked again. Any idea what would cause that?
Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg;
First off are you in the milatary, if so I can never thank you enough for all you do, Thank you( x )infinity. And so your rear brake is locked up ,it sounds like you may have some crud in your rear caliper, it is real easy to take apart I sujest that you dismantel it and clean it with brake cleaner, and while you have it apart examine the o-rings and possably replace them while you have it apart and remember to bleed your brakes after reassembly. If you deside to replace any parts in the caliper I can recomend cyclepartsnation.com to order your parts ,they have done me right in the past.Hope this helps you Bro.:

Thanks for the responce. I am in the National Guard and we were deployed last year and although tough on the family it is an honor to serve. I guess I will have to bleed some fluid off the brakes just to get the brake to unlock. Are there adjustments like on a Car to loosen and tighten the shoes? Also, what O-rings are there? Thanks for the feedback. I will be out of town this week but next weekend it sounds like a full disassembly is in order. I better order new shoes also since I hate getting down that far and not replacing them. Are there other parts I should replace?
Thanks again

Well the good news is that you've PMed your rear brakes now you won't have to mess with them again for awhile but the bad news is now you have to do it all over again, the procedure on the front will be the same if they are disc brakes , if they are drum brakes it will be about the same procedure just diffrent components. Good luck and thanks again for making this a safe and free country to live in it is the brave men and women in uniform that give me hope for our country.

I understand the rear drum brakes since they ar strickly mechanical. I am not certin what would cause the front pads to stick though. I know hydraulic presure pushed the pad against the disc but what causes the pad to come away from the disc once the handle is released? I am concernec it may be a master cylinder or brake caliper issue.
Thanks
Thanks

You are correct it is probably your caliper, when you squeze your brake lever this compresses the brake fluid an energizes the piston in the caliper and brings the pads together on the rotor when you let off the lever = no pressure on piston so it sounds like one of youur calipers is froze up ( don't worry if your bayou is like my mojave they look complacated but they come apart easyly). Hope this helps, there should be three o-rings in each caliper that you will want to replace and check out your pads, you can get the o-rings at cyclepartsnation.com also when you go to this site there will be an exploded view of your brakes that will help you with your job, I think what I did was I had to make the exploded view bigger then printed it out and used that for refrence.I just went to cyclepartsnation.com and looked up your bike and it has a very good view of your caliper on there , I was going to atatch it to this reply but it wouldn't let me ,so good luck.

OK
Now a two months have passed and I finally rebuilt the fromt brake calipers (new rings inside pinston cylinders) and I am trying to bleed these brakes but I cannot even get the slightest bit of fluid in the system. I re-assymbled everthing and filled the Master with fluid. I have both bleeders valves closed and a hose on one which is submerged in a can with brake fluid in it. I squeeze the brake lever and while it is depressed I open the bleeder valve 1/4-1/2 turn and reclose it. What am I doing wrong? Is there a trick to get some fluid in there to start with? I do not see the fluid drop at all on the master cylinder.
Any ideas?
Thanks

ok...just so someone else will know in the future. I truned the Bayou into the shop. Thei issue was that there are two ports inthe master cylinder. One of mine was plugged. plug cleared brakes bleed and work properly now.
