I have an '07 Wolvy 350 that won't start - I just get a single click from under the seat. The battery shows 12.45 volts and I checked all the fuses. It's not the starter making the noise... it's one of the parts under the seat, but I have no idea what they are or what they do. I'll have to get a full manual, but in the meantime, any ideas?

edit: is 12.45 volts enough juice? I have a feeling my battery isn't charging when I ride. I'm charging it overnight and will see what it reads in the morning.

 

Clean and tighten your battery cables and posts, clean with WD-40 and a clean rag. You would be surprised at the amount of gunk that comes off. Once clean and tight, spray battery posts with WD-40 and allow to dry.

The WD-40 will help repel moisture and corrosion.

I would buy a 'battery tender' it will keep the battery fully charged at all times.

 

coating the clean terminals with vaseline works well to stop further corrosion too. if you think the battery is not charging while you ride, take the positive terminal off the battery while the quad is running. the stator should keep the motor running if it is operating correctly. that should eliminate a charging issue.

 

The terminals are clean and tight. It's under a year old with just about 40 hours on it. Never seen mud or deep water. It's spotless under the seat. I had the battery low once before so it might not be charging.

 

Some machines don't charge the battery at idle, they run off the battery at idle. Popo's are that way Start the quad, put a voltmeter on the battery cables, and have a friend rev it up. The voltage should go above 12 volts as the revs increase.

If it don't it isn't charging.

 

Did you try a different battery? Try the one from your car. My factory one was junk after less than a year, because I never kept it tended. Won't happen again!

 

I worked late last night, so I wasn't able to get out. I'm definitely going to get on it tonight, the weather here has been perfect for an evening ride. It's been on a tender now for two days. I'll check the voltage before, during, and after to see what I get. Thanks for all the help.

 

i'd be looking for 12.7 straight off the charger, as soon as it starts it should climb pretty quickly to 13.2 or so and after say 10 minutes it should be a solid 13.5 and after you shut it back off it should slowly drop to 12.8 or so. just my opinion though

 

Here's what I measured, and it doesn't behave at all like I thought it would.... after charge I had 12.65 volts. That was not enough to do anything, not even make the click sound. I did notice that hitting the brake (a 20 watt bulb?) dropped the battery to 8.40. So, I jumped it from the Jeep - with the Jeep off. Running at idle, the battery read 12.54. When I increased engine speed, it dropped to 11.91 - this is where I'm lost, shouldn't it read much higher like in the 13's even if it isn't taking the charge? All voltage numbers are at the battery.

 

if it droped to 8 volts with the brake lights that says something right there. in college they taught us anything under 9.6 volts while cranking and the battery is junk. if it has a dead cell then the charging system at full bore wont be able to cancel out the draw. you may try to unhook the ground cable with it running and hold a volt meter on the positive and the unhooked ground lead. i think it should be around 13.5. just my opinion but i'm thinkin the battery took a crap. if it was charged for two days and still wouldnt start the 4 wheeler then something is up. and i'm guessing when you jumped it off your jeep, giving it 13 volts, it started like it was supercharged
