Default 400ex with k&n and vents vs predator TLD with HMF and edelbrock

I was looking at a predator TLD with an HMF pipe, edelbrock carb, and some other stuff.

My buddy with the 400ex raced him with his only mods being a k&n filter and airbox vents..... he won. He switched quads and my buddy said that the pred felt like it had less low-end torque than the 400ex. He also said that he noticed some backfiring and maybe even some flames shooting out of the muffler occasionally. (Could that be bad exhaust valves?

Does this mean that there could be something very wrong with the predator and that I should stay away from it? By the way, I highly doubt that my friend is biased towards his own honda because he used to always say that the predator was a beast of a machine..... up until they raced.

I kind of doubt that the pred rider sucked, because he seems like a decent rider.

I have a feeling that the thing has been beat to **** since it:
1) Has a bent rim
2) My buddy said the steering stem felt loose (crash anyone?)
3) Apparently it's loud as hell- louder than an unspark-arrested 250F MX bike

My moneys on Poor Jetting! Alot of ppl think they can buy a pre-jetted carb, and just bolt it on and go. Heck no... It comes jetted Close to whats needed IF that!
Couple that to a modified bike.. OMG NOWAY!

Backfires, Flames out pipe.. etc = VERY bad jetting!
(Pilots to small = Backfire aka pops under decel (LOL might be backwards here, Many beers in me ATM) , Flames out pipes = Mains to large, under decel or shifting. ala Gass in E-pipe!)
Unless you buy a "KIT" from a Well known Mod provider that has done the R&D. 90% of the time the Carb is at fault, for 70% of the problems with engine performance..

hmmm, could you get jets for edelbrock carbs at local dealers, or would I have to buy it from an online distributor?

First thing I'd do is a plug chop and see what direction you need to go from there. Any dealer is going to be able to (or should be) order the jets if they're not in stock.

Rick is a good guy, and you might just want to call him, after you do a plug chop and see what he thinks it needs.
