Default Tires larger than stock

How big a deal is replacing standard stock size of 24" with 25" tires and what changes need to be made to compensate if any?

Local dealer can't find the original size and wants me to move up.

This isn't a mud machine - all dry firm trails around here.

Thanks

on a 325 i think you will see a slight loss of power..not too bad.i have larger tires on my 400 sportsman and its like a lawn mower, slow and steady it'll go anywhere.. huge power loss for me though

There are probably a dozen different kinds of 24" tires available. Forget the dealer and look online.

It wont be real noticeable but you can do several things like lighten the clutch weights or richen the carb for low end torque, or even have higher psi in the tires. i ran 6-10 psi on the hawkeye.

Thanks for the input guys - after a few punctures and browsing through the forums I'm looking at the Maxxis Bighorns (6 ply) and the smallest they come in is 25". They seem to be one of the best rated by riders for dirt and rocky trails, some snow, etc. No mud around here unless you try really hard to find it.

I've got a couple of other issues to resolve before committing on this so I've time for more research (see Clutch thread )

A good choice for your conditions. Its not as good in the mud and snow but durable, wears well and has good ride/handling/traction on trails.

They make Carlisle and Titan 489s and Titan 489XTs in 24". They're good for 4x4 and 4x2. 489s are still one of my favorite dirt tires but I've been looking at Bighorns as possible replacement tires.

I would not put 25" BH on your 325 Magnum. Your stock 24" tires probably measure 23-1/4" inflated to 5 psi. The 25 BH will measure 25-3/4 at 5 psi. You will see and feel a noticeable power loss from the weight of the BH. Check out this site

You could put on cheaper lighter 25" 2 ply tires they would weigh less or the same as 24" quality 6plys. The Honda 500,AC500 and 660 Grizzly came stock with 25" 2ply so they would be OK on your 325.
