Normal Engine Hours
#1
I am looking to buy a 2002 Polaris Sportsman for between $2500 and $3000. I think it has 200 hours. Does anyone know what the normal number of hours per year should be on an ATV? Is 200 hrs in 6 years considered high or low?
Any thoughts?

welcome Kelly.
the hours on this bike seem on the low side but not out of the norm...it isn't unususal to find great machines that were hardly used sitting around in somebodies garage or on dealers used lots!
Also, keep in mind that most members here are going to be "enthusiasts" and will put on a LOT more miles then your normal Joe Blow owner who only occasionally rides!

Thanks...good point about the usage in this forum. However, for an example it has been established by NADA that normal usage for autos is 15k/yr. Do you know of any average for atvs?
I have turned my attention to a Honda Recon 4x2 250cc for $1000. I don't think for my usage I need 4x4. (San Antonio, Tx gets no snow and I don't like mudding) I get my kicks on a KTM 450 EXC dirtbike so I will only put around on this with my little toddlers. My wife will also ride it and she won't get out of 2nd gear. I think the 4x2 will cost 1/3 of a 4x4 and be 1/3 cheaper to maintain. If we don't use it as much as we think we will I have 1/3 the cash tied up. Also, it is about 1/2 the wieght and turns effortlessly compared to a 4x4 which is great for my 8 & 9 yr old and wife.
Do you have any thoughts on the Recon's electronic shifter on the handlbar? Any thoughts on the Recon in general?
THANKS!
