2003 Honda Recon climbing hill problem
#1
Hello everyone
Just purchased a used 2003 250cc Honda Recon on Saturday Oct 11/2008. Runs great, starts great and it seems to be a great little machine for me being a first time ATV rider and a 47 year old female. Oil is fine and tank is full but when I go to climb a steep hill it does go dead. little hills and smal inclines aren't a problem but the steep long hills it goes dead. Now I have riden it probably 5 or 6 hrs total Sat, Sat night and today sunday and its does great on level ground and even following down creek beds but the when I go to climb the hills that when it will go dead, I cost back down the hill and try to start it and it will start and runs fine on level ground, any ideas what might be the problem? I love this little machine and plan to have alot of good times ahead with it. Thanks Sandy

If it starts starving out after a bit of constant high throttle (like climbing a hill) I'd be wondering about something restricting fuel into the carb's float bowl. In addition to the carb's float and valve, I believe there is also a screen in the fuel tank. On many hondas anyway, you can unbolt where the petcock attaches to the tank to remove the petcock and the screen (with tank empty). Also check that the tank's vent isn't restricted.

Also, if the carb was cleaned at one time or another, someone may have left the main jet baffle out of the carb. With the fuel baffle gone the main jet will not pick up fuel when the unit is at an angle.
