Default Gas in my Oil

I just purchased a 2001 500 sportman and it is running fine. I checked the oil this am and noticed it is very thin and is smells like fuel. I went out today and purchase a new filter and oil to change. How can I resolve this. Is it from the manual choke? Running rich? I really do not want to run it unit it is resolved. Please help.

THanks,
Gene

I'm not sure if it's true or not but I heard that transporting it without shutting off the gas can make the gas splash from tank through the carb and wash the oil off the cylinder wall down into the crankcase. If you hauled it without turning off the gas, then that could be true.

Thanks for your posts. I will change the oil and filter and monitor the situation.
