Default I think I found my problem

Would bad reeds make it idle fine, but not rev at all? I need some input before I order parts. It has good compression and spark. Thanks in advance. It's a 2001 Scrambler 400, BTW.

Well, I feel pretty good about the trade then. I traded my '96 Magnum 425 2x4 for the Scrambler and a 2001 Trailblazer.

Default I think I found my problem

Well, the new reeds didn't fix it. It still will only idle and when you push the gas at all, it falls on its face and backfires. I pulled the flywheel off and found some exposed wires at the stator and fixed them, but it didn't help. I have one question, though. Does the flywheel on a 2001 Scrambler 400 2x4 have 4 or 6 magnets? I thought they were supposed to have 4, but mine has 6. I think that may be my whole issue. That's the trouble with getting one that doesn't run when you get it. It also looks like someone did a little grinding on the holes on the stator plate to adjust the timing. I just need to know if i'm supposed to have 4 or 6 magnets on my flywheel. So let me know, OPT, Rick Ritter and all the experts and thanks for your help.

SOunds like a carb issue. Maybe a jet stopped up?? Make sure intake boot is not split between carb and engine. Engine could be sucking air causing the engin not to be able to pull enough fuel in with the air. It would suck air. Does it start easy? When you put the throttle to wide open turn the choke on and see if it is affected. Anymore info provided would help with a diagnosis.

It doesn't appear to be a fuel issue.I sprayed carb cleaner around The boot while it was idling and there was no change. there's also no change with the choke pulled. I also cleaned the carb and blew out all the passages when I got it. It acts like it's way out of time, that's why I was thinking it may have the wrong flywheel. I've searched and can't find a pic of the inside of the flywheel. The polaris site only shows the outside, not the magnet side.

It wasn't the reeds. It had the wrong flywheel. It had a 6 magnet flywheel and it was supposed to have one with 4 magnets. I got the right one from Ebay and it runs great now.

i had a similar problem with my 02 250 trailblazer it would idle fine but when i hit the gas it back fired and had nothin but ran good with the choke it took me a while to find the problem but it was the little fliter on the drian line off the carb so i ran single lines ran great after that
