My Honda Recon (2001) cranks in reverse---Can you tell me what is causing this problem?

What do you mean by "cranks"?

 

The 4-wheeler would crank with the shift petal in either neutral or reverse. I had a close call or two before I decided to fix it. I found the problem-- the two wires going to the reverse switch at the rear of the transmission were naked!!!!!!!! I had the 4-wheeler to catch on fire while prescribed burning last year. I replaced the drive shaft boot then but didn't notice the burned wires.
I do custom burning for the public and have my torch mounted on the ATV--Glad to get it fixed before burn season gets here-
