250ex Jetting/Carb Issues
#1
After getting an air filter and a new exhaust, and rejetting with the jets the dealer decided to get me. I know for a fact that the main went up from a 95 to a 100, and after running it maybe 6 hours, when I touch the inside of the pipe with my finger, it's covered in black and soot.
Also, is there something I can adjust externally from the carburetor to make the mixture less rich. I am currently running without an airbox lid on either, but that can be changed easily. If anybody could help, I'd be very happy, b/c as of now I am not riding at all due to the fact that I am worried for the machine.
I don't know how off these settings are, but that soot seems very drastic for just a few hours riding. I do not want to waste the money I paid for this exhaust, but if there is already damage I do not know about, maybe the dealer would get me a new one since they provided the jetting.

as far as i know a soot is only a sign that your running too rich. mabe try a 98 main jet and see if this cuts back on the soot. have you checked the spark plug?
if not warm up your wheelr then take it for a good run all the way threw the gears then while at full throttel hold in the clutch and hit the kill switch. then take out and look at the sparkplug, a white plug means your too lean, and a black colored plug means your too rich. idealy you want the color to be a marshmallow brown.
I would do that befor messing with jets and such. and it is common for a new exhaust to burn some of its packing; that could be the sourch of the soot as well.
hope this gives you a good base to start at

Ok I will look at a quick way to take out my plug and check it out right after I'm finished riding, thanks for the help man. If it's sooty I'll definitely look into getting a 98 main jet.

if you look at the spark plug its critical that you kill it when its at full throttel, that will show how the fuel/air mix is burning at full throttel. full throttel= what your main jet is doing. that will tell you if the main is too lean or rich.
but is the mechine isnt overheating, soot in the exhaust is no big deal and isnt gona ruin your engine. so i wouldnt be afraid of rideing it
