2001 Polaris sportsman 90 intermittent spark
#1
My son has a 2001 Polaris Sportsman 90 and I having trouble getting it to run right. It was low on compression, so I put in a new piston and rings. Also, I cleaned the carb and put in a new spark plug and battery.
It seems that the spark is very sporatic and weak. When I pul the plug to check spark, it sometimes has spark (not real strong) and sometimes has no spark. I've checked the conections and cleaned the stator. I don't know what else to check. Is it time for a stator, coil, or anything else? I really don't know what to do.

9 out of 10 times IF an elec part fails its the stator on the earlier 50 and 90's. Cant recall any coils are cdi's I have had to replace on em,just stators from dirt and mud that shorts em out,BUT as posted before with elec ANY thing possible! See if can get specs on stator resistance to eliminate or confirm its the problem. Good luck

Im not sure how the 90 is wired. Are you able to change the plug wire or is it one with the coil? You could have a bad spark plug wire. Also did you set the gap on the new plug? If you have done all of that i would put a new coil in!

a Coil can get weak. Have you looked around for a wiring diagram and specs for the stator. there is a way to meter the stator to see if its good or not. did you have good spark before you rebuilt it?

No, the spark was the same but it was low on compression and needed a rebuild anyway. I don't have a manual so I don't have any specs unfortunately. The coil is quite a bit cheaper that the stator, so maybe I'll start with that first. I found one on ebay for $10.

I would do the coil. also check all of your grounds and your ignition switch. i have had a ignition switch go bad that gave me a weak spark. your coil should be powered from the ignition switch. not sure if its powered from the switch or if the switch just grounds out the spark.

Ok, I replaced the coil and wire... Still the same thing. When I check the spark, the first few turns of the engine, I have spark. After that the spark become extremely weak or non-existant. What do I do next?
