Default Yamaha Grizzly 600 Carburator Problems?

Hello all... I am in need of some help. I have a Grizzly 600 - 2000 or 2001 with some problems. When I am riding my Grizz at low speeds it operates like it should and can even do some hard work around my property but as soon as I try to have some fun with it and start to give it some extra throttle usually at the upper end of rpms, it will suddenly start to backfire constantly and almost try to stall. My Grizz will not stall while in this state unless I try to give it too much throttle which would be anything past an idle. If I play with the choke and the throttle at the same time I can get a little power out of it but just enough to usually crawl back to my house. This problem will usually go on for a couple of minutes and all of a sudden I hear some sort of clunk noise from what seems to be coming from under the gas tank and it will run like normal. Once in a while the problem will go on for longer then usual and I will let it sit overnight and by the next day it will run fine like nothing happened until I start to push it again and then I am back the same problem. I had a friend look at it for me and he said that I may have some water in the gas which I did find some when we drained all of the gas out of it. I replaced it with 93 and some octane booster but it hasn't seemed to help that much since I am still having the same problem. I also tried to squirt some carb cleaner in the carb (about 1/4 can) which hasn't seemed to help. From everything I have read it sounds like a carburator problem that I am having but before I try to rip out the carb myself or take it to a shop and spend way to much f$$king money on rebuilding it I wanted to get some more opinions.

Thanks for the help, John

you may have trash in your carb. that can be the reason why your problem is intermittent. your high speed backfireing sounds like some trash is getting sucked into the main jet and causing the engine to run too lean. If your mechanically inclined, you can try and clean the carb yourself. itl take less than an hour typically. a can of carb cleaner, and a good set of eyes to inspect the jets. spray carb cleaner threw all the jets and make sure there is nothing blocking them.

good luck

Do you have to take the plastics and gas tank off in order to get the carb off? I almost took it off myself yesterday but the gas tank seemed to be in the way so much that I could not get to the pannel where you unhook the throttle.

thanks for the input!

i have no idea about the gas tank or plactics. but iv never taken the throttel linkage off for a simple carb cleaning. on most mechines there is enough movement in the liknage to lift up the carb and turn it upside down. enough to remove the bowl on the carb and access the jets.

If yo want to you can take the plastics and gas tank off to make it easier, the throttle cable will need to come off if you want to take it to a work bench.

I think at this point I will take the front plastics and gas tank off to have easier access to the carb. Does anyone else out there have a Grizz w/ similiar problems?

Thanks for the help, John

I have another question about removing the carb. How do you remove the choke cable? It looks like you can disconnect it from the carb w/ a wrench. Is there another pannel you need to take off (like the throttle cable) to disconnect it from the carb or do you just disconnect it from the outside of the carb?

Hello all.....I fixed the problem!!! I took off the carb and flushed it out w/ carb cleaner and cleaned as much gunk out of it as possible. When I hooked everything back up it ran GREAT!!! I did have one problem when I was working on the carb. For the life of me could not get the two screws out the the bowl to remove it so I had to squirt carb cleaner through the needle hole from the top of the carb after I removed the plate and needle which did the trick. The one screw is now so buggered up that it does not look like it will ever come out. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get them out now that the tops of the screws are basically stripped? Or should I take the carb to a shop to have them work on it next time?

Thanks for all your help, John

can a shop even get those screws out if they are stripped or am I going to eventually going to have to buy a new carb because of some junkey screws?
