2000 Rancher 350 won't go to neutral
#1
Due to vandalism on my ATV, I had to replace the ignition and the plug coming out of the wiring harness. When I finished that, everything worked fine -- the machine was in neutral, it started, and I went for a test ride. So far, so good. I then stopped it (in gear). When I went to start it again, I couldn't get the transmission to shift into neutral. Its stuck and I'm stumped.
1) Could this problem be related to something I did when replaciing the ignition pieces? or
2) Could it be a transmission problem that just decided to occur at this time.
Its the model with the manual transmission.
Thanks to anybody who can help.

Which model and year ATV is it?
If it is manual then it is unlikely to be ignition related -- have you rocked the atv back and forth while trying to change gear?
If it won't move at all it sounds most likely to be a bent or broken gear selector

if you had a neutral light when you set off, and now it wont go into neutral its probly a broken gear shitf of selector in the transmission. try rocking and shakeing it while downshifting. if it downshifts then you where just stuck between gears.
good luck

First time after new ignition got oil light and neutral light. Now when I turn the key all I get is oil light. I've tried rocking it back and forth, etc., etc. It seems to down shift, but not go from first to neutral. I'm thinking this may be a problem for the Honda dealer to figure out. Thanks for your reply.

It could be the Reverse/saftey/shift cable needs an adjustment , this Saftey/shift cables main fuction is to prevent the transmission from being shifted from first gear to reverse while the quad is moving ; just an idea to check out before taking it to the Dealership or something to mention to the Dealer's tech if you do take it in for repair !
I don't have a Repair Maunal so i can't give you the info on the adjustment procreedjure , hondamachanic would have this info i've seen a post not to long ago with this info ; you might do a search on how to adjust the reverse shift cable while you're waiting on hondamachanic to jump in !......

the revers cable has nothing to do with the transmission going into neutrail. hondas are set up so you have to be in neutrial in order to go to revers. the saftey cable is there to make sure your on the break and stoped, since you have to press the button and pull the break before going into reverse. and even if your in neutrial, if you moveing above a certain speed it wont allow you to shift into reverse! thats honda saftey so you dont destroy your transmission if you are rowling down a hill.
this safety feature is only for hondas, NOT other bikes. i know that you can shift a kawisiki from a forward gear, or moveing forward, straight into reverse and shread the gears.
bottom line not your reverse cable, but a good thing to check if your atv wont shift from neutrial to reverse.

Honda did have a problem with the rear post on the shift drum breaking but that doesn't sound like your problem because the thansmission would go into neutral just the lights (R , N) wouldn't come on .. If your transmission won't go into neutral even while pushing the bike back & forth then you may have to remove the clutch cover and check the "shift drum center" & "gearshift arm" ...
If it were my bike before I removed the clutch cover I would ground the LG/R (light green with a red tracer) when you ground the wire the neutral light should come on and the electric shart should work , but be careful because the bike is still in gear .. Once the bike starts then try down shifting...

Yes i know that cherokee99 i owned a 86' Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 for 15 yrs and i never had to adjust this cable , but i had a freind who had a problem with his 350 Rancher not going into newtral after someone stole it ; when he got it back it wouldn't shift from first to newtral and it turned out to be the cable on his quad !
A very strange case with his Rancher we had to engauge the reverse cable to get it into newtral , after adjusting the cable the problem was solved ; might not be so in this case but worth a try !.......
