Stator/flywheel questions
#1
I have a 2001 Scrambler that has a few issues. It will only idle (badly). When I try to accellerate at all, it falls on its face and backfires. I got it like this, so I have no history on this thing. It acts like it's way out of time. From the few posts I've read about the ignition systems on these machines, it should have a 4 magnet flywheel. Mine has 6. It also looks like someone elongated the mounting holes on the stator plate so the plate would mount flush on the motor. I think the bottom end may have been replaced with one from a Sportsman, Xplorer, etc. and they just tried to put the original stator on this motor. I've been looking at diagrams and I was wondering if I could just replace the stator and CDI with ones from a Sportsman, etc. That way, I'd have the 260W charging circuit to help keep up with my winch. Besides, the only Scrambler flywheels I've seen are new and there are lots of Xplorer stators and CDI's on Ebay. If I changed the flywheel, I'd still have to change the outer housing so the Scrambler stator would fit right. Does It look like I'm heading in the right direction? Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know where the serial numbers on these engines so I can identify it.

try adjusting throttle cable, there is a safety device that if the cable is too tight or loose it will run bad. thumb throttle should only have 1/8" play,no more or less.the adjustment is couple inches up the cable.

It's not the ETC. I've tried everything. I cleaned the carb, checked compression, disabled the ETC and reverse limiter and replaced the reeds(one was cracked). I even swapped out the CDI with another one that I had.

I had this issue on a 250 Trailboss. Replace both the Pilot jet and the Main jet in the carb. I know you cleaned them, but REPLACE them. When you have the carb off, spray carb cleaner through every hole you can find.

Well I finally got it fixed. It had the wrong flywheel on it. I replaced the 6 magnet flywheel with a 4 magnet one and it started right up and revved without backfiring. WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!. Now I just have to wait a few months for a warm day to ride it.

Um, Why? Quads are a blast to ride in the snow! My neighbor and I took a 20 mile ride down our local county roads during our last major snowstorm. It was AWESOME! No traffic and a fun chance to ride on the road. Even without snow, winter riding is fun. I've gone out riding at a local state area as low as 5 degrees (Wind chill was in the negatives) on my DS and Polaris. Dress in layers & bundle up.
Jetting is simple - for a 2 stroke, just modify the jet size by 10 for every 20 degrees in temperature change. Example: Lets say you are running a 265 and it is 70 degrees out (say it runs perfect). If you want to ride in 50 degree weather, switch to a 275. 30 Degree weather would be a 285 and so on. Adjust the air screw for proper idle and reset the idle speed. If the mid throttle power feels soft, raise the needle 1 position (Lowering the clip on the needle).
