Bad starter....and leaking gas??? SP500
#1
I hope this is just a dead battery but i just picked up a 2000 polaris sportsman 500 and it has started pretty well since ive had it...last night i went to start it and it would turn the engine over for about a second then just go to the whinning noise of the starter. So I kept trying and trying with no success....tell the battery basically died out on me. Then it wouldnt turn over at all. Bad battery or starter. Tryied tapping on the starter while turning it over with no success. Any input???
Also...when i leave the fuel line on it leaks gas all over the ground if it is just sitting. IS this a bad fuel line or something??? I have no idea right now....this is my first ATV. Sled guyy by heart. Anyways great forum you guys have here and i am really glad i found this .

I hope its a bad battery. Plus when i went out this morning and tried to start it it turned over and whinned just once...then it seemed like it didnt even have energy to do it again. Probably the sub-teens weather right now doesnt help. How much is a battery? should i get it from the dealer or go to fleet farm or something and get one?
Also, I have been reading about the needle sticking in the seat.....should i just buy a rebuid kit at the dealer and be done with it?? Probably good maintence anyway huh?
Thanks alll you experts.....this machine was really fun when it was running!

you can jump it it wont hurt a thing. gas is leaking because either you carb is dirty or the needle valve has a peice of trash on it not letting it shut off fuel flow or the needle valve is wore which will let it close up all the way but has a small passage way for the gas to keep coming into the fuel bowl. i would try cleaning your carb very well taking everything apart and making sure all the little holes in the carb body are clean ect.
since your starter was working till the battery got low i would say your battery just needs to be charged up. might take it off the bike and top it off if neccessary

I would worry about fixing the leak first, it presents a fire hazzard that could ruin your day. Any spark from connecting and unconnecting jumper cables could cause some excitement you may not want.
The flooding problem could also be hydro locking your engine, (not sure of your model design).
What do you mean by starter whinning?

thanks for the tips guys.....is there a better battery than another? I am in the process of moving right now so i just would like to get her going then do all the maintence work when i am settled in the new place. Thinking about totallly taking it apart and going through it. Not the engine part though. two much 4 stroke stuff...like i said i am a fuel injected polaris 2 stroke sled guy hahaha.

the pull start is also broke as well....is that an easy fix to take off that plate???? And re-do it. I would probably take it off and have my dealer redo the rope with string and spring...because i have tried doing that before....WHAT A PITA.
