2wd or 4wd ???
#1
Hey I have a 2006 800 sportsman, when I am in 2wd and give it partial gas it is doing what its sapose too spinning only the rear wheels, now if I punch it in 2wd it engages the 4wd,but only if I really hit on the throttle hard.
This a problem with these units or what.
sort of pisses me off, now that the ice is here a guy likes to have her go snakey in 2wd,not engadge 4wd by itself!
any info would help
Thanks

It should not do this. I had a Polaris with AWD and when in AWD, I NEVER noticed any slip in the rear tires prior to the front ones engaging, the slip was so minimal. I often put my front wheels up next to a log in 2WD and accelerated letting the rear wheels slip and the stop and engage AWD to see if I could detect any slippage and could not, very good system and great on ice or anything else slippery; even used it in wet grass a lot and often didn't bother to disengage AWD when just riding through the woods.

Another possibility is that the armature plate in the front diff is warped or has become magnetized. If that's the case you can get one from a John Deere dealer cheaper than the Polaris dealer.

most likely the roller cage is the issue being craked. there has been reports of excessive rear wheel spin causing the front to engage. i my self never had that issue on my 06' 800.

Thanks for your input, I am still not sure though, some say hilliard cage, armature plate, roller cage,I guess what? pull it all apart and have a look? I did just change fluids last week, check again and its very clean and full!
any more tips would be great, what happens if I keep driving it like it is for a while?
Cheers!

Thanks for that, sort of bull **** on polaris's part though.so you replaced yours on the sportsman 400, how much were the cages? and are you refering to the hilliard cage or roller cage, or are they they same thing?
thanks for your input.
P.S- whats the weather doing down there?

the roller cage is what everyone is refering too(maybe the same as what you call the hillard cage as its a hillard front end). yes its fairly expensive($200+ i beleave) but some have used beleave it or a john deere part which works very well for a fraction of the cost. there is post about this if you search.
