Advice needed, used quad, needs work, good price

Hello all.
Ive been wanting to get a 4 wheeler forever, but things have just been to tight. I guess fixing it could be a way to finance it I guess.
I found one that I want, but I dont really know alot/anything about this stuff, so Im looking for some insight. The atv is a 99 polaris something, 2 stroke. On the side it said 250 and 2x4. Hes asking 600. He says theres something along the lines of ignition something, coil pack, ignition pack and he named a few other things it might could be, but that was the only thing wround with it. Body was decent to good.
He said he just put in a little over 300 into it. He had the front brakes redone, and new battery and starter, and something else. The only reason he is selling it is to by Scuba tanks.
I hate to ask so many questions, but I would be thankful for some info
Should I buy it for $600 since im strapped for cash and cant afford to buy a running 4 wheeler?
What model is the thing, 99 polaris 250 is all i know?
What do you think might be wrong with it, and what I might could expect to pay for various ignition work?
Is there anything I should look for/at when i go to buy it?
Thanks if anyone can HELP me, I want to buy it by this friday before someone else gets it.

It's probably a Trailboss. They sell for about $4,000 brand new. See if it looks something like this. http://www.polarisindustries.c...30/Pages/features.aspx Sorry I can't offer any advice.

In 99 the only 2x4 2strokes were 250 Trailboss and 250 Trailblazer. The trailblazer would be white and yellow I think the Trailboss would be green or possibly white and green.
If you are a decent mechanic you can get these 2strokers going ussually need new topend job you can do the labor yourself other than boring and get by with less than $200.But ralize that in excelent running condition the older 250s dont bring much over $700-1100 tops. You can tie up a ton in one in a hurry.

read sig. lol
he said all that was good, he said the only thing is that ignition issue. he said it was no big deal, he seemed Very trustful and honest. He said the motor ran really strong, it just had trouble with the ignition.
I plan on not really pushing this thing hard at all, just something to ride with my friends when they go. All repairs would be done at a local atv shop

So he shoud look for one that is running for the price range...
With $600 in this one and more $$$$ to get running.......You may be better to look around for one that at least starts....This one may take more Cash that you think................Caper............

Keep it comin, But I am REALLY impressed with the quick informative responses.
The the cheapest full size off brand quad at tractor supply company is at about the tip top of my budget? Any input on that? low- Mild riding, and a warranty too I think. Cant go wrong with a warranty right? I have heard good things about the manufacturer. And the risks of other chinese quads. All warranty issues are handeled by a local shop.
