Rancher Gearshift Plate Recall
#1
Its official from Honda (US at least) on the shift plate recalls - I received mine today. I saw prior posts indicated Canada had invoked it. It indicates all 2000 TRX350FE/FM/TE/TM's and specific 2001 TRX350FE/FM/TE/TM's (no other details). I got my A-Arm recall completed about 1 week ago, and now I need to go back. They were quick on the first one, and did a good job. I hope the same on this one. I just wish they would have come at the same time!
The recall is in effect thru 2/01/2006
They will reimburse prior costs of fixing this thru 6/30/2001
Good Luck!

I took my Rancher to the dealer this morning for the A-arm recall fix. Picked it up from the dealer this evening unloaded it, put in the garage walked out to the mail box and found the "Product Update Campaign" notice to fix the shift plate. What timing

My Rancher was still at the dealer getting the A-arm deal when the gearshift plate recall came. But the dealer hadn't got the parts from Honda yet so I'll have to bring it back--maybe. The front case has to be opened and I don't like the idea of someone inside my motor whose main concern might only be to get it done quickly. When I asked they said Honda wants them to do the repair, in other words no do-it-yourself exchange of parts. Was thinking maybe I'll open it myself and close it up again if that would be acceptable for the warranty. Another possibility, if the part doesn't cost too much, is buy the thing outright and be done with it. But I'll see--my present dealer seems to be a good one and maybe I'll come to feel confident enough for them to do it.
I just have visions of some bozo jigging around with a ghetto-blaster in the background working my baby over with an air-wrench and channel-locks.

There was a recall notice waiting for me in the mailbox yesterday.
Gooch, which dealer do you use in Portland. Honda of St. Johns did my A-arm bracket recall even though they didn't sell me the ATV.
Does any one know exactly what the are doing & replacing in the shift plate recall?

I would assume they are replacing the shift plate assy with a stronger metal since they specify that the current shift plate deforms But from looking in the maintenance manual at the shift plate assy it looks like they have a lot of work to do to replace these things. It makes my stomach turn thinking about having them pull a bunch of stuff off cracking open the case and then trying to re-install every thing like dive shaft, shift motor, skid plates ect. yuk!
Has anyone had one of these replaced already
what did they have to do to do this??

I use Beaverton Honda-Yamaha on Rt 217 in Tigard mostly because they're close and dealings with them, although limited so far, have been A-1. The place I bought the quads from is much further away and that's the main reason I haven't returned. Wish I had known of BH-Y before--might have got a better price. Their no. is 503-684-6600.
The "gearshift plate" looks like it's inside the front case (I think), a small but complex ***'y of springs and levers. I wonder if the problem comes mostly with power-shifting. I try to be careful, but sometimes while hot-rodding around my right thumb doesn't always get coordinated with the "UP" button under the other thumb.
I don't know if it's possible to get to while the motor is in the frame, but I suppose you 4wd guys would have more stuff in the way.

Gooch,
We were at Steve Lanphears Honda-Yamaha this past Sunday. They were having a sale, we were looking at the Rubicon. They had a great price $5999 +$189 setup & freeight. My wife told me to get it if I wanted to!!! Got to love women who ride. I passed on buying it but it was hard. This dealer is about 30-35 miles from me so its not too handy. Although when I need something on a Sunday they are open, which is good.
