Default 1995 Polaris xplorer 400l "4x4 slipping"

While the atv is under load "plowing" in low range the 4x4 starts to slip when your really giving it the beans. "pushing a real heavy load" Almost feels like a chain slip but when inspecting the sprockets and chain they all look good. None of them are bent over like my old dirt bikes that allowed the chain to slip over the teeth. The problem gets worse just putting the atv in reverse to get plow out of the bank. The slightest load in reverse really makes it slip. Any ideas?

do you mean by slipping the engine is reving up but your not moving, or barely moving? if so its the belt that is slipping most likely. is it grinding? metal on metal would be an easy thing to tell vs. just the belt slipping.

What I mean is:

Like a slip of the sprocket.... with a snapping sort of sound. Really intense when in reverse and you have to hit it pretty hard to do it in forward. I know it's not a clutch slip.

It comes from the front end.... That's why I inpected the front chain and sprockets... but now i'm questioning the hubs... I have no experience with atv hubs but have had my fair share with trucks.

Since it appears that my hubs are engaging is it possible they could be ***** or not engaging all the way?

I just purchased this atv a few months ago... never really put a serious load on it or took it any place to put it through the paces... just riding around the yard and pulled a deer out of the woods.

Now with the plow it's getting a workout and having issues.

Also, while in forward on a semi hard surface... If I turn causing binding on the posi in front ( i think it's a posi rather than a limited slip diff ) it intensifies the jerking or slipping of the front tires.

Is it possible for the hubs to slip like they aren't all the way engaged? And be worse when going in reverse?

Check the eccentric bearings. They cause similar issues when the cage is broke and under load.

I've had the silent chain issue on my 2002 scrambler.... and this is definately different. It's almost like a snapping sound when it slips... and comes from the front end. If i'm really ginger on the trottle in reverse it doesn't do it. But just blip the throttle and it doesn't sound good at all. It takes quite a bit to do it in forward....
