Hey all.
I have a 98 Xplorer 400 I'm tryin to get going for a friend.
The piston is Fried and I need to get a new one.
One ebay I have found plenty of them but they all seem to be for Older Models.
The ports are longer, The one I'm working on has the small ports.
Will the bigger port pistons work on this newer style ATV?

go here for the correct piston.

 

This is the guy I wanted to buy parts from. But if you look at the picture those are the Large Port pistons. The ports in the one in the atv now has Maybe 1/2 inch size holes.
I'm pretty mechanical. I'm just not that familiar with the Two stroke engine.

 

i just looked up the part numbers and as long as he has the correct machines listed there then it will work.

Look at the ports on the side of the piston.
I have the smaller one, So what the guy has listed doesn't really matter since the Xplorer was built through a range or years where they started building them with the smaller ported Piston. I just don't know why or if the larger ported piston will work or not.
Hate to buy it and find out its the wrong one

 

DONT buy a piston before you mic the cylinder.Then get the piston from the shop that is going to bore the cylinder.AND YES IT WILL NEED BORED.

 

I have the cylinders in stock ready to ship - PREBORED for exhange . Just return your old one . I also have gaskets and bearing and piston .

I still don't see the answer I'm looking for here though. Why the change in Port size on the pistons from early to later Year models. and say I have everything Mic'ed and order the right size, will the large port pistons work in an engine that had a small port piston in it. Our plan was to get a 40 over piston in hand and have the machine shop match the cylinder to the piston. I have measured it and it's still stock.

 

The machine shop will measure ot first and tell you how much it needs bored, I would look at Rick Ridders stuff he is very good and reasonably priced.
