Default 400 ex-more power to keep up

few questions. i go riding with my bro's down forest roads and they run 2007 z400 stock and mine is a stock. for whatever reason they smoke by me on straight aways. i bought both K&n filters ( lid and cone) and ordered a pro circuit exhaust. after i install and do the dynojet, should that be enough to take them on the stretch. im on a tight budget...can any one help???/

It will help, but I think the Z400 will still pull you.

The Z just has more top end. It's water cooled and a little lighter, so it has the edge. The one place the EX excells, is in the tight woods where you need to lug the engine down. That is one place where the Z doesn't do so well, because it likes to rev and you have to do lots of annoying clutch slipping.

Down a long desert wash with both quads 5th gear pinned, a stock Z will slowly walk away from my lightly modded EX.

Another mod that will give you a bit more horsepower, is OIL! There is a new generation of very slick ester synthetic oils out there, that contain organic friction modifiers....yet they are wet clutch safe, and will protect your engine better than any oil you could ever imagine! All this reduced friction, results in an engine that will rev up faster and freer.

I run Redline MC, but also recommend Maxima Ultra or Maxima 530MX (in cold weather).

The gearing has a lot to do with it. Honda geared it like Recon said, so it can lug way down in the gears. The Z reacts more like a 450, faster reving.
