Default Shortening a chain

I don't have a chain break tool and I need to shorten an 86 link O-ring chain to make an 80 link chain. Can I carefully use a small grinder like a dremel to grind the peen off of the pins and then drive the pin out with an appropriate punch? What about getting it too hot and possible damaging the O-ring?

You can get a chain breaker for like $20.00 ........ It is a lot faster and easier than using a grinder. Mine has paid for itself more than enough already......

ya grind the link flat part on both sides, then grind down the ends of the pin going though it...after that take a punch and hold the chain in a vice and hit the punch then it will come out....
